Show and Tell Cabinets

Filed under: Homescape — Treasures on Townsend @ 7:50 am

Nothing elevates a collection more, or gives it more mystery that displaying it behind glass. When arranging a present day curio-cabinet keep in mind the goal of the seasoned collector.  Aim to entice the eye.
Arrange objects with care and use your creative side to best showcase your collection.
Lighting a cabinet may be desirable in order to better view objects, but be subtle.  The light inside the cabinet should not be so intense that it overheats and damages the objects or their surfaces. Some suggest forget the lights altogether, unless you collect Tiffany or Faberge’ or other exceptional fine objects.

Whatever you decide, art cabinets are fun to have in your life; they provide the proper space for your objects of desire.

Furniture history

Filed under: Homescape — Treasures on Townsend @ 7:50 am

The art cabinet is the glorious ancestor to the present day curio cabinet. It originated in Renaissance Italy as essential furniture to the private study in the 1550′s.  Fashionable Italians took to outfitting their studies as rooms for reading and displaying and showing off collections of cameos, bronzes and ancient treasures.  As collecting gained status, a custom-made cabinet, became a powerful status symbol.

“The evolution of the cabinet as a piece of furniture was the single most important development in the history of the study in Renaissance Italy, for it demonstrated the importance of collecting as a form of interior decorations.” Writes Dora Thompson of the British Museum in her book The Scholar and his Study.

The wealthy went all out hiring artisans, architects and craftsmen to engage and create fashion cabinets out of luxurious materials. Talented Italian furniture designers moved to France and quickly introduced the richly inlayed pietra dura cabinets to the court of Louis XIV loved the extravagant design of the cabinet   but Louis XV was not so keen on the pieces and sold many of them off to English and Northern European collectors. That event caused art cabinets to became more common throughout Europe; there popularity continues to grow today.

How a client found her treasures, part 4

Part Four

Gardening

At this point, the inside of my house looked fabulous, but the formerly only adequate outside of the house and landscaping now seemed disappointing.  One of reasons I bought my current house was because of the pleasant neighbourhood, but my yard had been benignly neglected for some years.   I was certain that I was not up to the task of renovating this landscape, but Bernadette was.

I had not know, but Bernadette is an Advanced Master Gardener and at once she developed a plan matching the yard with the surrounding neighbourhood as well as my unique interests and tastes.   Bernadette not only designed the layout and walked me through the plans, she coordinated all of the contractors and as glitches do come up- she resolved them in a timely manner.

I was recently speaking with a friend whom was admiring my yard, and she was amazed when I informed her of how Bernadette conducted all negotiations, bargaining, cajoling, etc.  My friend had told me that she thought about hiring landscapers but she felt that it was too much to take on and she knew that she didn’t have the personality to insist and persist in getting satisfaction in the result. I am happy to say that throughout this process, Bernadette has helped me when I needed or wanted help and allowed me to deal with just the things I was comfortable addressing- she handled the rest.

There are really treasures to be found at Treasures on Townsend, its kind of like finding a jewel box that has many compartments.  One drawer is full of consignment items for you and your friends.  Another drawer holds Bernadette’s design consultation, a third holds organizational tools to help with downsizing or transitioning-  assistance is available.

Its not at all overwhelming, and when addressed in stages, it can be empowering. Just look and discover.

Part Three

Organization

Showing off the rooms, unfortunately, revealed how poorly I manage my things.  Most of the time, I have no clue where a piece of paper should go, only slightly more often do I have the notion of where a household item lives or would like to live.  Thus, I too often fail to organize or put away miriade homeless items.

I soon learned that Bernadette also has people who excel at organizing the home. Now, I am pleased when I catch myself actually looking at something in my hand and instantly know where it belongs.
